The barking dog

There are you several reasons why a dog will bark incessantly. In order to discover how to make a dog stop barking you must first discover why the dog is barking in the first place. Most of the time, your dog will be causing annoyance because it is barking loudly or incessantly outside of your home. Most dogs that have a problem with barking are confined in the backyard and can get really bored. This is because there is no mental stimulation for them. Quite often you will see a dog with its head stuck underneath the bottom of a gate trying to see what is going on beyond its own territory. This kind of setting is not good for a dogs overall mentality. It is definitely not good for a dog to be cooped up in such a small area without proper exercise. You must take your dog for a walk least once a day for at least 30 minutes to one hour of vigorous exercise time. If you can't manage this yourself you must pay somebody else to do it for you.

Another problem with excessive dog barking is that the dog feels rewarded every time it barks. For instance, in the situation above with the dog sticking its head underneath the gate, the dog sees somebody walking by it barks ferociously at them and they go away. The stimulus to bark is that there is a person walking by, the reward for barking is the person leaving. The next time the dog see somebody walking by it will bark even harder in this will spiral out of control until you have a dog which is compulsively barking. Dog barking can also occur compulsively when you are not there, sometimes it will bark incessantly until you come back. The stimulus to bark is that you have left in it wants you to come back and the award for barking is that you will eventually come back.

The barking dog just does not know any better; it is up to you to show the dog what way you want it to behave. You are the master, you are the leader of the pack, and it is in your hands to stop the barking dog.
