What To Expect When You Quit Smoking

By Emerson Biggins

Do you smoke? Are you thinking of giving up the cigarettes? Do you want to know what to expect when you quit smoking? Well you've come to the right place. I was addicted to cigarettes since I was 12 years of age. It's not an easy thing to give up cigarettes, I know, I've done it hundreds of times. And I know what to expect when you quit smoking. Smoking is such a nasty habit of we all fool ourselves that we are enjoying it. This is especially so when we have been smoking for a number of years and we are beginning to feel the effects of sucking all that hot smoke into our lungs, coughing and spluttering our way through every enjoyable cigarette.

So if you want to know what to expect when you quit smoking I will be able to tell you because after all of 40 years of smoking I have finally quit.

What to expect when you quit smoking

I took my first cigarette when I was only 12 years old. It was from an older boy, maybe two or three years older than I was, you can imagine what I would like to do to that older boy if I could get my hands on a time machine. Suffice to say it took me a long time to actually get hooked on cigarettes. That's the real kicker, you don't get hooked with the first cigarette, you really have to try and get hooked on cigarettes. When I think about what to expect when you give up cigarettes, I know now that one of the more insane things is that almost 4 years later I will get cravings for cigarettes. And these cravings always happen at most unusual times. Before I gave up the cigarettes I would always enjoy a cigarette after a meal, with a drink, while on the telephone, in a traffic jam, the list of times when I would enjoy smoking is endless. Now that I have quit smoking cigarettes I get urges to smoke at times when I wouldn't have even thought to have a cigarette before.

What to expect when you quit smoking

For the first few days of giving up you will probably go through some pretty rough times. This is the worst time for giving up. The quit smoking effects will make you want to scream sometimes. The worst thing you can do is panic. You want to remain very calm and collected. Don't let the urges for cigarettes get to you. If you want to know what to expect when you quit smoking, you can basically expect to have constant urges. These constant urges will only last for a minute or two, try to keep your mind off smoking and the urges will pass and you can carry on with your life. You must look at your quit smoking plan and realize that quitting smoking is all about getting through these individual urges of two or three minutes, getting on with your life, getting through the next urge, continuing on with your life, rinsing and repeating this. The urges will begin to come less often. You will continue to get urges throughout your life. I have spoken to people who have quit smoking for 20 years and still get urges every so often. That is a long-term what to expect when you quit smoking.

I've tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.

Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.

Check out this article: http://quit-smoking-today.bestof-the-net.com/

it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!

I am in the first stages of kicking the bad habit of smoking. In a couple of days it will be two week. I've been smoking for around 20yrs. I have gained a little weight but I realise I need to focus on more exersise. My stomach is swollen and very painful. I wonder if this is another side effect of giving up smoking.

I'm a 39yr old woman.

I have quit smoking for only 6 days. now mind you I wasn't a pack a day nor did I wake and smoke, nevertheless, i was addicted. Anyway, after only 6 days I feel lighter, like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. The scale hasn't moved but I feel very unburdened. It feels good to have that monkey off my back. Not that I haven't had cravings - I am just determined to work through them. Pickles seen to work and aren't too fattening, just full of salt. good luck all!

I have quit smoking 4 one week, it is really hard, Many unexpected effects to my body, which is hard to explained, some are good but some are not usual as i read in the NET,

One strange feeling that i experiencing is that at my first day of quitting till now till the 7th day i feel lightheaded and i feel like im palpitating but when i get to check my pulse it is basically normal in rate, i really don't understand where or what are the causes of this symptoms, but maybe this could be of that some symptoms of nicotine withdrawal i guest.

One of the hardest thing for me was to resist the voice in my head saying to me, even after many months of abstinence, that I could smoke a cigarette, that I would not hurt.

The nice thing is that every time I stopped (and restart!) I have fallen into this trap, but not when I found a deep motivation. In fact, now I do not smoke and I quit with no withdrawal symptoms. Strange? I do not know, but I think that our mind can do everything.

That at least is my experience and what I think.

Today is day 3 since I smoked a cigarette.

Its hard, the cravings are monstrous, its really strange how ur mind can play tricks during the cravings. Ur mind seems to tell you its ok to have just one. Don't do it, the craving doesn't last long

Day five, still a non smoker. Is it any easier? Not really... there are brief moments when it seems harder.

I want to be a non smoker. God has given me the strenght to get through those brief moments. Not sure how long the craving will continue. I am a non smoker.

I've only been smoking for a year and 4 months, but I've been trying to quit for about 5 months and have just officially started. The gum was useless and e-cigs did not do the trick. Quitting cold turkey was the only option. So far the worst symptom is the heavy coughing because the body is trying to get rid of all the crud left from somking. Cravings aren't too bad to ignore until I'm at work but I just have to keep busy. Good luck to everyone trying to quit!

Day 51, never thogught I would be saying that after smoking for 40 years. The cravings are still there but I'm able to handle on a craving by craving moment. The key for me is I want to be a nonsmoker. I also ask God to continue to keep me strong. It is an awesome feeling not to have that awful habit hanging over my life. Stay strong fellow non smokers. Pray for strength

I just started my cigarette quitting programme for few days. I totally agreed that the cravings is a killing part, luckily it is only last for a couple of minutes. it comes and it goes, i am still holding on to it and at the sametime doing a lot of exercise to make my body sweat. it really helps. Wishing all those who is trying hard out there have a better lifestyle to come. GOOD LUCK!

One week three today, irritability at a new high! I'm am completely obsessed. Just took four drags off a ciggarette and it was disgusting. I feel a tiny bit better knowing that a ciggarette won't remove what I'm feeling. I am completely disorganized. I can't get up on time in the morning, my thoughts are scattered and I haven't pooped for days no matter how many outside sources I use. Going to spend the day on the internet looking for support. God Bless Us All! I'm to far in to go back and not far enough in to be healed.

12 days ago, I decided not to buy any more cigarettes. There are some cravings, but not anything to send me to the store. The first few days, I wanted to rip some people apart and did not make the connection. Doing very well now and am unusually focussed.

day 2 of quitting..cold turkey..i have tried patches..chapix (as its called in ireland)...i kind of know what to expect so although last times i gave in i believed my excuses...this time i know they are just that...poor excuses.....if your not committed you will fail.....i have never felt as relaxed and quietly confident about recovering from nicotine addiction...i feel i will do it this time...i found whyquit.com and their free online books a major eye opener and a great mind clearer...i wonder if you stayed off the cigs deborah??

Wow! What a task to quit smoking. I am approaching the 7 day mark quickly (3 hours). I smoked for 27 years. I still look pretty young BUT my cough sounded very old. My motivation is that I don't want to look into my kids' and husband's faces while living my last days suffering from lung cancer when I could have just quit. My cravings are killer! I want to poke people's eyeballs out and I have no patience. It's hard to remember why I quit sometimes so I tell myself that at one point it was important and urgent enough to quit cold turkey. I TRUST MYSELF, that I made the right decision 7 days ago. During some cravings that trust and a prayer is all I have to hold on to

Its torture, and I'm wondering if ts worth it...?? I know it is, but am wondering will I ever enjoy anything again, Coffee, Dinner, Driving.. Life??

ys 7 weeks ago

on day 6, 20-30 cigs a day, for the last 17 years, and today feels horrible, just horrible. yeah, but i repeat to myself, the smoking option is closed forever.

chef 4 weeks ago

I don't normally do this, but hey, I don't think i have ever done something so difficult and self gratifying as to stop smoking. I was also 20-30 smokes a day for close to 20 years. today is day three. yesterday was tough. my girlfriend looked at me and I could see she was feeling my pain. LOL. went and loaded up on fruit yesterday. preparing for another snack attack.
