If you asked people what do dog barking sounds mean to them they would more than likely look at you as if you were a bit mental. Many people think that it is just an exercise in vocal noise which is done by the dog. But there is actually a basic level of communication which is being done with dog barking sounds. The most common sound that we have for a dog's bark, apart from the word "bark" is the word "woof". Dogs are basically descendents from wolves. Now, wolves actually bark very seldom and when they do it is only for very brief periods and in a much more shortened way. Wolves always tend to howl a lot more. The modern domestic dog is still capable of howling but has a much more wide variety involved in its barking.

The domesticated dog is seen as an oversized puppy. A lot of the characteristics in wolf cubs are present in modern-day domesticated adult dogs. There are various theories to explain this. One of the more obvious reasons is because an adult dog is more than likely to be more aggressive than a puppy like animal. Another reason is because humans prefer to have the playfulness of the puppy rather than having a dog which is very serious. So, back to the subject of dog barking sounds. There are different levels of communication within a dog's bark. They can be barking to express enthusiasm or excitement, they can bark to express playfulness, they can be barking to attract your attention (just think of Lassie), and dogs will try and communicate with you through engaging in barking.

Dog barking sounds are not as rich and informative as human speech. But they do convey certain messages. A dog would have completely different kind of bark when it is afraid or disturbed than when it is trying to play with you and is completely relaxed.

Sometimes dog barking sounds can become a nuisance. If you are living in a neighborhood where everything is quiet except for one or two dogs loudly barking either during the day or more disturbingly through the night, this can cause various problems for you and your dog. There are ways and means of controlling your dogs barking by using dog barking deterrent as such as though barking collars. But you should not always try and stop your dog from barking altogether. The reason for this is because sometimes dog barking sounds can mean that the dog is warning you of a certain danger, somebody approaching your home for instance. At other times the dog may be barking too inform you that it is bored of being left in the backyard for so long it once you to take it out for a walk. If you are willing to take an animal in your house then you must try and fulfill all it needs just as you would for a human being. Sometimes the dog will bark very loudly and continuously when it has too much energy... it wants you to take it out for a walk. So if you listen to the dog barking sounds a little closer you may become a lot closer to your best friend, your dog.
